Fear Free Veterinary Equine Practice Exam

Giving a horse treats after showing signs of anxiety during procedures can reinforce positive behavior, especially when the treats are given in a calm and controlled manner. This approach supports the principle of positive reinforcement, where the horse learns to associate the presence of treats with moments of calmness or a decrease in anxiety. By providing a reward in the form of treats when the horse starts to relax or after it demonstrates a desirable behavior, you are encouraging the horse to repeat those behaviors in future situations that may provoke anxiety.

It's important to ensure that the timing of the treat is immediate and follows a moment when the horse has shown some signs of calmness or has made an effort to cope with the situation. This helps build a stronger connection between the behavior and the reward. Over time, this association can lead to a reduction in anxiety and a more positive experience during veterinary care or other stressful situations.
